Our purpose is “to promote research and learning in the history of Sutton; to acquire, preserve and protect property, both real and personal, having historical significance; to establish a museum to display documents, relics, and objects; to promote the celebration of patriotic and historical anniversaries; to record events both past and contemporary, for the purpose of publication…”

The mission of the Sutton Historical Society succeeds only through the support of people such as you.  If you are like most of our members, you realize that the measure of our society and the true history of our community is found in the stories of events and more importantly in the accounts of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

History preserved by people like you...

History is preserved, not through government institutions but through actions of selfless individuals like you who became aware of an important event or were touched personally, then inspired to do what they can to save it. Important sites large and small -- locales throughout Sutton are remembered because of endeavors of people like you.

We invite you to become a member of the Sutton Historical Society ...

Only through groups such as the Sutton Historical Society does real history get passed on for future generations.

You have an opportunity to belong to such a group and assist in the preservation of rare documents, uncommon stories, numerous artifacts, eyewitness accounts -- the actual records of people, real people, who lived here and created the community we now enjoy.

The Sutton Historical Society was started in 1969 by Malcolm Pearson and incorporated in 1970.  Malcolm Pearson was joined by others who value the lessons of the past and sought measures to secure them for the future.

Through the support of people such as you, a museum has been created in the General Rufus Putnam Building.  Hundreds of objects are on display and letters, postcards, photographs and memorabilia are being preserved and documented.

Preservation our greatest challenge...

There are very real costs involved in preservation. Heat, cold, moisture, dryness, fire, accidents, shortage of space, neglect and lack of interest have taken their toll. Deterioration is a constant. You will be helping to preserve Sutton’s history by becoming a member.   Part of your membership fee goes toward the production and distribution of our newsletter and the balance goes toward conservation of our treasured buildings, documents, artifacts and memorabilia that were donated to the Society.

As a community we grow learning from our past and we hope you will join us in preserving this knowledge for the future. Sutton and the very real people who were involved in her history -  their stories deserve to be remembered.

Part of your membership fee goes toward the production and distribution of our newsletter and the balance goes toward conservation of our treasured buildings, documents, artifacts and memorabilia that were donated to the Society.

What you receive as a member...

As a member you will receive two or more issues each year of our publication, The Bulletin.  In this superb journal you'll learn about renowned and lesser known personalities involved with Sutton’s history.    You also are invited to attend events, lectures, and to participate in trips to historic locales with the Society.  We host an antique fair each year on the Sutton common and participate in celebrating important anniversaries and holidays.  Your membership will enlighten you about the historic past of Sutton, will bring you new friends who share your interests, and will provide you with opportunities for community service that enrich our community.
